drBOB's PICKs: Jacksonville Florida
I lived and worked in Jacksonville between 1972 and 1984. There have been many changes since then, but they seem to be all good changes ... e.g. the city is much cleaner, safer, and it is much easier to get around, even to the beaches. The following is a set of my favorites and also a set of suggestions that you might find enjoyable for you and your family. For instance while the conference attendee is busy with sessions, family members can spend time at local attractions, the beach, St. Augustine, and any one of these would cost less than $5 per person to get there.

Getting Around: Local travel on the Conference Hotel side is easy by foot or by Trolley. Take a look at the map below and note the 2 Trolley routes, plus the JTA Skyway options. Also, if you want to get to the other side of the river, just hop on a Water Taxi or catch the Skyway at Central Station. You can buy a week pass for just $12 for everything except the Water Taxi.

Key Skyway stations are Central Station (where you select the shuttle going north or going across the river), and the Rosa Parks Station (where you can connect to Busses going to the beaches or to St. Augustine). For those of you wanting to save money to the airport, you can also connect to JTA line CT3, but of course it is not as fast as the Taxi, but it is only a buck. Coming from the airport you would also catch CT3, ride the Skyway from Rosa Parks station to Central Station, and then take the Bay Street Trolly to the Conference Hotel.

to the Beaches: For those of you wanting to get to the beachs (Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Jax Beach), it is only a dollar to one of the beaches, and there is a Beach Trolley that runs between beaches for another buck. JTA Buses are caught at Rosa Parks Terminal and AR7 goes to Mayport and Hanna Park, while CT4 goes to Atlantic Beach, and K2 goes to Jax Beach. The green line below is the Beaches Trolly/Shuttle.

St. Augustine:
You are visiting Florida's First Coast, so named because Ponce D'Leon first stepped foot on America's shores and named it "La Florida" - the flower. This history is most evident in St. Augustine, America's oldest city, and it is only a couple dollars, and a couple hours away by bus. the Sunshine Bus Company also connects at the Rosa Parks Terminal and is the Purple line mentioned on the JTA website (http://www.jtafla.com). Depending on whether or not you want to shop at the Primier Outlet Mall or just go walk down St. George Street and see the Castillo de San Marco Fort, you can get there using this bus service.
